Luke 1:38
[38] And Mary said, Behold the handmaid of the Lord; be it unto me according to thy word. And the angel departed from her.
#A. HEAD 🧐
1. OBSERVATION (What do I see?)
– And Mary said
– Behold the handmaid of the Lord
– be it unto me according to thy word
– And the angel departed from her
2. What does it MEAN?
– Who is speaking? Mary is speaking to the angel which the Lord has sent to prophecy about the birth of Jesus, and John the Baptist (her cousin Elisabeth’s son, she is the wife of Zachariah who gave birth in her old age)
– And Mary said: Her statement to the angel, was an acknowledgment of the message and it shows her willingness to follow through which the prophecy that has being given to her.
– Behold the handmaid of the Lord:
°handmaid – doulē – a female slave, bondmaid, handmaid.
°She considered herself as someone that the Lord can use to do anything, she willingly submits herself to God, as a slave does to her master. I submit myself to anything you want me to do, even the impossible.
– be it unto me according to thy word:
° There is a common phrase amongst youth, I am submissive o; but there are somethings I can’t take that I will never do. I agree that I am your slave o, but this, this and this; I can never ever do it.
° How will I explain to my fiancé that I am still a virgin? How do I explain to the society? They would have stone me to death before the baby even grows in my womb. My beloved Joseph will be very sad and heartbroken. What would my parent, friends, siblings say?
° But, Mary just out of honor for God submitted to the word of the Lord. Her response even sounds like a prayer; may the word of the Lord be fulfilled in me. When she clearly didn’t know how it is literally going to happen and how to handle the responsibilities that are attached to the Lord’s instruction.
° Oh that I may always submit to the Lord’s instructions at all times, even when I lack foresight of how the process will be, and how the price I can see would be paid.
– And the angel departed from her:
° Normally the angel would definitely leave, but it is also an example of submitting to God.
° If the Lord sends me to do anything, immediately I am done I return to base. I don’t hang around to check if Mary might start crying so I can console her, I don’t add another assignment to my work after the Lord has specified my assignment; I am also bounded to not do beyond what the Lord has sent me and to stay in the confines of the Lord’s instruction. Trusting that the Lord that instructed already has a plan for how things will go next.
3. What stood Out/ What issue is God Raising with me Today?
Oh, that I may always submit to the Lord’s instructions at all times, even when I lack foresight of how the process will be, and how the price I can see would be paid.
#B. HEART: What is my ATTITUDE ❤ (Checking my attitude against the issue raised) / (How does the understanding of this truth makes me feel?)
– When the Lord says something, what do you say? How do you reply?
– Do you say your own in a bid to make God’s word more convenient?
– Do you obey God’s word the way it is?
– Do you tell God, let me think about it because I don’t think I can follow through? Or you subject yourself totally to God, so that He can flow through you?
– I might seem incapable, feel unworthy, see plenty impossibility; but I renew my mind, that I am always swift to pray in agreement with God’s will. Be it unto me as the word of the Lord; I start to see possibilities, hope and faith, strengthened from within, following the Lord’s instruction, one foot after the other as the Lord guides and leads me.
#PRAYER 🙏
– Be it unto me as the word of the Lord; I start to see possibilities, hope and faith, strengthened from within, following the instruction of the Lord, one foot after the other, as the Lord guides and leads me. (Amen)
– I thank you Lord for your word is strength to me, your word prepares my heart, it helps me to grow beyond my limitation and makes me a better servant to your will. To do your will is the best things that can ever happen to a man; for this is the entire duty of man, to fear God and to obey His commandments.
