Music has been around for centuries, and in fact, is a part of life. Music comprises various sounds that a carefully crafted to produce good melodies. In our world today music plays a very vital role in many people’s lives. For some, it is a means to relax, for some, it is a means to get excited and vibe to the melodies, for others it is a remedy against depression. Did you know that by listening to gospel music often you stand or gain many benefits from it? In this post, I am going to be covering 5 compelling reasons why Christians should listen to gospel music often.
Many Christians often wonder if the kind of music they listen to matters and why it is important. In a GenZ generation liberty and enjoyment, it sometimes seems like music is just fine. However, it is not so. Music is more than just a sound, rather it is a collection of vibrations that can influence your emotions, your thought process and even your lifestyle. Biblically, Christians are encouraged to listen and produce music, this pleases God in heaven and has so many benefits for us.
1. Gospel Music Feeds Your Soul
The Bible in Colossians 3:16 says “Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom…”. Listening to gospel music is a means to achieve this as a Christian. Through scripture-based music you can feed your soul with the word of God, thereby helping you live holy and grow in Christ. When we listen to gospel music it reminds us of the person of Christ, our identity in Him and His wonderful promises to God.
If you feel like you are lacking in God’s word in your heart, consider listening to gospel music more often. God’s word through gospel music can transform our mindset, which will have a profound impact on our lives. This is why it is important to be mindful of the kind of music you listen to as a believer because the words we hear can affect our thoughts and ultimately our lives. Listen to music that will uplift and edify your soul, drawing you closer to God and helping you to grow in your walk with God.
2. Gospel Music Can Enhance Your Prayer
Do you ever find it difficult to maintain consistency in the place of prayer life? There are often times when we do not have the right words to express ourselves in prayer. Gospel music can be a great tool that can help you in such times. Music has the power to create a spiritual atmosphere that enhances focus, reverence, and emotional connection during prayer. It can articulate the inexpressible, express the unspeakable, and stir up deep feelings of devotion and worship.
Spiritual songs and chants can be a great tool to stir you up to pray. For me, I sometimes enjoy listening to Gospel ministers like Minister Theophilus Sunday, Ebuka Songs and Pastor Lawrence Oyor as I pray. Their songs usually help me to focus on God in prayer.
3. Gospel Music Can Uplift and Inspire You
Gospel music has the power to touch the hearts and souls of listeners, offering a sense of comfort and solace during trying times. With its soulful melodies and inspiring lyrics, it can serve as a powerful source of motivation and encouragement. Its uplifting messages can bring hope and positivity to those who are feeling down or struggling to find their way. Not only does contemporary gospel music have this ability, but traditional hymns as well. The timeless melodies and lyrics of these hymns have been known to provide a sense of peace and tranquillity, helping to restore a sense of well-being and purpose to those who seek it.
Whether you’re listening to gospel music for spiritual upliftment or simply to enjoy the beautiful music, it can move and inspire you in profound ways. Apostle Paul writes in the book of Ephesians, “Be filled with the Spirit, addressing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody to the Lord with your heart, giving thanks always and for everything to God the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ”(Eph. 5:18-20 ESV) Therefore, music has the ability to encourage and edify us.
4. Gospel Music Connects With God
Gospel music provides a unique avenue for a direct connection with God that sermons often can’t replicate. Singing enables a heartfelt communication with the Divine, a form of expression that transcends the spoken word. Have you ever noticed the remarkable transformation that occurs when we sing? This phenomenon is particularly evident when we sing collectively as a congregation in worship. Something awakens not only in the heart of each person but also in the collective heart of the body of Christ, connecting us to God in the deepest part of who we are.
Singing as a part of Christian worship is so much more than mere mental exercise. God created us to communicate with the very depths of our spirit, and singing is a way we can accomplish this in a profound and meaningful way.
5. To Fulfill God’s command in Worship.
Throughout the Bible, there are numerous references to the power of music in worship. It is considered an essential part of praising and glorifying God, rather than just a form of entertainment. Music has the potential to inspire and lead us to feel closer to God, which is why it is such an integral part of worship in many religions. The act of singing and making music to God is seen as an act of devotion and gratitude. It is a way to express our love and reverence for God and acknowledge his greatness. In fact, many of the Psalms in the Old Testament were written as songs of praise and worship to God.
As devoted disciples of Jesus Christ, it is crucial that we consciously select songs that inspire and elevate us. The things we expose our eyes and ears to can significantly affect the condition of our souls. Let us be mindful of the kind of music we listen to and choose songs that uplift us and bring us closer to our faith. There are a lot of gospel artists you can explore out there through streaming services or gospel music websites and I am sure you will be blessed.
